English Vinglish refreshing as a cup of coffee

It  was delightful  and at the same  time engrossing  till  the end  to watch English Vinglish an Hindi movie directed  by Gauri Shinde and produced  by R.Balki ( director of Paa).

The movie  is  about a  typical  Maharashtrian  housewife who excels in everything except  understanding and conversing in  English.  She  becomes the butt of jokes in her family and  also the family  just  thinks  she is not capable of  anything  except cooking and making laddoos.

By  the  way  she also doubles up as an  entrepreneur making laddoos and selling  it  with lot of personal touch and making it a  success.

She   stoically  bears  all the  hurt and neglect  from  the  family  and like most of the  Indian housewives, does  not find it necessary to express her  feelings.

The  transformation  happens  when  she  has  to go  her  Sister’s  house in New York  and  help her  out  in  a  month’s  time  to prepare for  the wedding of  her sister’s daughter.

Shashi ‘s   inadequacy  in   English language  puts her in awkward situations  and  she  embarks  on  a month long  course  to improve her English language skills.   Finally  she  is  able  to speak adequately  to convey her feelings  about marriage  and  the importance of  respect  among the spouses.

The  movie  is  really  empowering  to all  the  housewives  who face a similar  situation.

The  movie  comes  as  a breath  of  fresh air  in  its  treatment of  the  subject and  it  has  a  feel  good  factor  and positive vibes all  along the movie.  The audience  feels  protective  about Shashi  and  is delighted  when she  succeeds in the end.

New  York  city’s  landscape  and the  towering  buildings  have  been  captured  well in different frames  in the  movie. New York 's  free spirit and  the freedom to individual to learn and excel comes across very well.

The movie  is  a tribute  to  the Indian housewife  who is  resilient  and  puts her family above all  and  if  given a  challenge  and  a chance  can succeed  with flying colors.

The  movie  makes  us  realize  that  the  housewife is  the  glue  which  binds  the entire family.

Shashi  speaks  on  behalf of  all  Indian housewives  when she  tells  that  she  requires  respect   not love from the family.  Giving  respect  is  the minimum  a family can  do for the  love  she  showers  on   the  entire  family.  

Needless  to  say  Sridevi  has  done  justice to the  role.  It  is  nice to see  movies now  where  script  and  the director have become King.
